A vergence in the Suck
Aug. 19th, 2010 08:06 amOne of the questions I always have when watching Episodes II and III is - how much of what we see of Anakin is Hayden's inability to act, how much is George's inability to write dialogue, and how much is an accurate portrayal of a warrior monk and former slave with no idea of how to healthily express his feelings, especially to the object of his boyhood crush? Can anyone tell, and does it matter?
IMO, this is one of those cases where casting someone with a limited range (say, "stiff", "smug," "petulant anger" and "creepy stalker") actually helps the performance; consider Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, a space alien clumsily imitating human beings. And if you put words in his mouth that were clearly written by someone who's never talked to a real girl, so much the "better."
