Thoughts in transition
Sep. 3rd, 2011 11:39 pmI've been here a few days now - well, nights mostly - and I still don't really feel settled.
A lot of that is because most of my stuff is still in boxes, of course; I've opened a few that I needed specific items out of, and left the rest for later. But I'm also still learning the... let's be charitable and call them "quirks" of my new lodgings. This morning, I found out that having my computer desk under the south-facing window in one of the two bedrooms makes it much harder to see anything on the monitor during the pre-noon hours, thanks to sunlight hitting the blinds - and if they weren't closed, shining right into my eyes. So I'll need to move it to one of the other walls. Of course, this hadn't come up at all during the previous evenings.
Still sorting things out with my phone. The most bizarre part is that if nothing is plugged into the living room jack, I don't get anything back here. So I have my phone/answering machine out there... but if I pick up the handset, I get screechy modem noise on the line; if I hit the "hook" a couple of times, the router disconnects and I can talk normally. It's a lot like having dialup again, only much much faster. I suspect the solution is simply that I need to put a filter on the line, and indeedQwestCentury Link is supposed to be sending me a few... but if they're in my mailbox, I can't get at them.
Yes, did I mention I have no mailbox key? Wasn't given one with the lease signing on Wednesday, and I was so busy with everything I didn't think about it at the time. And of course, the office is closed for the holiday weekend... honestly, I don't need to get in there this weekend. It's just one more little thing.
By Tuesday, I expect/hope to have most of the boxes unpacked and stuff put away where it belongs, the move-in checklist completed and ready to be exchanged for a mailbox key, some more groceries in the refrigerator and a shower curtain for the bath, maybe a rug for the front room (so I have something to park the bike on, especially once it starts getting rainy out)... all the necessary details that I need to start feeling like this is home.
(And if the phone jacks are still acting up, that'll be the time to make another customer-service call.)

Date: 2011-09-04 05:38 pm (UTC)The part about not giving me internet back in the bedroom unless I have said voice set connected in the living room still confuses and vexes me, however. At my previous abode, I simply plugged the phone into the router/modem (which has a socket just for that, and can act as a filter itself) and had no further trouble.
