Well, they do refuse to use hasmat suits or even gloves in obvious Biological.chemical risk situations...

Not always! They're in hazmat gear in TOS "The Naked Time" when they first beam down to the frozen outpost, but the polywater bug gets them anyway. (Nice job breaking protocol there, Crewman Joe.)

In later series, they rely waayyyyyy too much on the magic biofilter on the transporters, which is supposed to screen all that stuff out, but of course fails whenever the plot needs it to.

One of my *cough* "favorite" randomly-generated missions under STO's old exploration system had the intro of "Everyone on this outpost suddenly went crazy and killed each other for no apparent reason. So we're sending you in, with no protective gear, to find out what happened. Good luck!"
