As Starfleet captains go, Kathryn Janeway is very much like Chris Pike.

Certainly there are differences, some of them attributable to gender... but both are serious, cerebral, disciplined, steely-eyed and a bit stiff-necked. They’re protective of their crews (to the point of self-sacrifice), have a tendency to brood over any perceived failures in that duty, and are implacably hostile to those who would threaten the ship. They don’t charge boldly into situations, but their curiosity has been known to overcome their better judgment (and later they brood about that, too). They are parental figures, the stern father and the mother hen, with only one or two confidantes they trust enough to drop their personal shields for. And they hardly ever smirk.

The swashbuckling maverick with the Tom Sawyer grin; the smooth, scholarly gentleman-officer; the man of destiny whose deep passions are often hidden by a placid, reflective surface; the explorer impatient to claim his people's place among the stars... none are quite like these two kindred spirits.

You forgot the part about both characters being played with the Scott Summers Stick-up-the-ass school of acting. :)

Read the first sentence, second paragraph again. ;)

However, note that they both had an even bigger stiff (Number One, Tuvok) to stand next to and make them look slightly less so.

And I like them both. Can't stand Kirk, find whatsisnameincharge of DS9 boring, Picard's OK but his occasional bouts of repression annoy me. :)
