There's something so weirdly compelling about the world of Top Gun. It's almost sorta anime-ish? Like there's no real world logic at work at all in that movie, but it totally works because it's really not trying to in the first place.

Like a bunch of hot competitive jock boys all go to this school and play their little sport and show off at each other all the time and btw they're all hot. Everyone has cute little nicknames that they choose themselves that tell you everything you need to know about that character and it's all kinda douchey if it wasn't so darn cool. Every cool pilot has a copilot, and the only thing any copilot ever does is act as their own personal dedicated hype man.

Like it's a movie about fighter pilots that ends in a battle and it has absolutely zero interest in being a war movie whatsoever. It's 100% a sports movie.
