I got up early this morning (my regular time, early for weekends) to help out my fellow Taxibots on City of Heroes' Virtue server; we were conducting a sight-seeing tour, 'porting people around Atlas Park to get their exploration badges. I did that for a couple of hours and then went back to bed for a nap, getting up again about 3 to make the 4:45 showing of The Incredibles at Valley River.

The Polar Express people seem to have picked up most of their techniques from the fire sale Squaresoft had after the Final Fantasy movie failed to meet expectations; or maybe it's just coincidence. I did see the trailer for Episode III. The thing that made me go "squee" the most, as a fanboy, was the glimpse of what I'm sure was a Z-95 Headhunter. This is for two reasons: one, a Headhunter on film! two, the current version of the Z-95 is directly based on the production concept art McQuarrie did for the X-wing, back in 76 or so when Han Solo was an alien and every stormtrooper carried a laser sword. So in at least one sense, "the circle is now complete."

The Pixar short, "Boundin'", was cute and silly but also offered a much-needed message of hope from a jackalope, which amounts to "keep smiling and just roll with whatever happens." I'll try to keep it in mind.

Hoo. Great movie, well worth the wait. My highest praise goes to Holly Hunter, whose Elastigirl was totally genuine - as a mother, as a hero (but I repeat myself), and even as a pilot. (The character design is also, as I've previously remarked to [livejournal.com profile] ardaniel, hella cute.) Craig T. Nelson was as good as I thought he'd be after seeing the trailers, Samuel L. Jackson is always a hoot, and newcomers Vowell and Fox were great as the kids. Jason Lee as Syndrome was appropriately creepy and broken as scary fanboy turned Bond Villain. (Since the other game I've been playing a lot of lately is Evil Genius, I dug his Sekrit Volcanic Island Lair - the set design, the minions, even the rocket - beyond words.)

The movie let out at 7 and I went over to the Olive Garden to treat myself to dinner, at a friend's suggestion, while my local crew is up at Orycon. Yes, [livejournal.com profile] lethran, you told me about Olive Garden last year, but I still had the rest of the gift card to use up. Which I did, on a "Tour of Italy" plate of lasagna, fettucine alfredo, and a chicken breast parmagiana, with pasta fajoli as the soup. I stopped when I was full and brought the rest home in a box. I didn't get dessert, since I have leftover candy.

Fog was rolling in when I got to the theater, and by the time I left the restaurant at 8, it was thick and dark. Crossing the Willamette River foot/bike bridge, it was as if there was nothing at all to either side - like the rest of the world didn't exist. My hair was wet by the time I got home.

And now? IRC, and probably a little more City of Heroes later on. Yup, definitely a good day.
