Can someone much more cool and hip than I explain the origins of this phrase? Did it originally refer to tennis, subpoenas, what?

I'm fairly sure it has something to do with the legal papers variety of serving. Don't ask me why. I'm not cool, I just play cool on TV.

Perhaps it's a reference to the classic BBC situation comedy Are You Being Served? (1972-1985)

Zangeif: You got... paid?

It's damn sad...
