Portland trip
Aug. 14th, 2005 11:35 pmWell, that was fun.
Left work at 3 on Friday (with a few things left to do on Monday, since I was under a tight deadline to get home to make pickup). The ride up wasn't too bad, except for a few miles of stop-and-go somewhere around Salem due to an accident. And thanks to
naudiz, I'll always look warily at anything from the Santiam FLAV-R-PAC plant.
Maps and directions from teh intarweb took us right to the front door of
meriwynn's mother's house. While the rest of the group went off to see the Decemberists in concert at the Bite of Oregon food festival, I stayed there for an hour or so to get caught up with an old friend and talk with her son about games, Star Wars and other subjects of interest to an extremely bright (and squirrely) boy going on 9. Toward the end of the visit, I tried to impress on him the lessons of my own experience growing up gifted but socially unaware (something his parents have also dealt with). Then the others returned and we all spent a few more minutes talking, and then we were headed off down south again.
We wandered around a bit in search of an elusive Dennys (after
biomekanic said he'd rather not eat at Baja Fresh again, and we found a Village Inn just as it was closing). The dinner was good, even when someone in the group two tables over loudly demanded better service and then got up and left. :p
We arrived home safely sometime around 11, having endured the long boring stretch between Albany and Eugene and some people with an odd idea of passing. Thus ends this hobbit's road trip for the year.

Date: 2005-08-16 06:01 am (UTC)Luckily, the Kidlet is much more socially aware, at least with his own age group, than I was. He has friends, he's outgoing rather than introverted, and shares an interest in Yu Gi Oh with his classmates. :) He's a good kid.

Ah well. Back the salt mines of online Help.
