Like certain stars, my LJ seems to be entering an active period.

Every now and then, I get the urge to run a Star Trek game. Or sim. Or just write it myself, since in the depths of my genre-fiendness I don't trust others to get it Right. Ahem.

Right now, I've got two ideas floating around in my head. The first would be TOS... from the other side. See how a ship of swarthy, smooth-headed Klingon warriors and soldiers of the Empire deal with strange new worlds, uppity computers, and self-styled "gods." (For those who get the ref: yeah, it's pretty much Battlecruiser Vengeance.)

The other would be TNG... sort of. The captain of an Excelsior-class feels that he was born a century too late, and has gathered other mavericks under his command who don't fit with the new kindergarten-scissors Starfleet. Adventure on the edge of the Federation, a lot like TOS, but with an even more fussy and ivory-tower rear echelon. (Part of my thinking about this is that a lot of modern fans seem to prefer or only be familiar with the TNG era, so it's more accessible than a straight TOS concept.)

I don't know if I'm going to do anything with either of these. I just thought I'd float them for comment.

Ooooo! You know how I love your games. I hope you'll wait until I return so I may be a part of them!

I like 'em both. I especially like the Klingon one.

Of course, what I would do is make it an RPG, but not use the Star Trek universe. Use TOS Klingons for inspiration, but with different twists. Sketch out the universe a bit, but don't tie it to "canon". Bounce around ideas with the players, and have fun with it.

(It has just now occurred to me that this would work just as well as a game about vikings. Just replace "uppity computers" with "uppity missionaries", and you're set!)

There's a non-canonical canon out there, the StarFleet Technical manual universe of StarFleet Battles.
They run a GURPS lisenced version of the SFB universe. Nothing says though, that it can't be converted to a d6 setting.

Oh, and hell yeah, I'd play.

but not use the Star Trek universe.

But that's the point, man...

I really like running in other people's settings, though as you've noted with SW, I tend to (and am quite capable of) ignoring the stupid bits.
