(reminded by something on another forum)

I had no problem with Willow being gay. Really.
I had a problem with being told that she was ALWAYS gay (really).

"Just ignore Oz, and her unrequited crush on Zander, and all the other boys she mentioned. In fact, just ignore the first three seasons. Also, Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia."

It's a bad and clumsy retcon, and it's insulting to the faithful fans.

Yeah! Whatever happened to "She can be bi if she wants"?

Oh. So, bi people don't exist, but vampires and werewolfs do - and not only that, they make perfectly good lovers, nobody should ever question our ability to sleep with souless creatures.

Got it. Thanks :)

Well, to me it's not even a matter of sexual identity; it's a matter of outright contradicting what's gone before.

"Willow has always been gay" is right up there with "Buffy has always had a younger sister" - except that retcon actually had justification in story, and some characters were able to perceive that it really hadn't always been that way, that reality had been changed.

Agreed.

And it's very annoying, when the *obvious* answer is that Willow was always bi.

Of course, I suppose she could've always been a deeply closeted lesbian, but that doesn't quite seem in character for her.

You mean I've been hallucinating you all this time?

Who have you been hallucinating?

I know it's always been there in fanfic, fandom, etc... but it seems like recently there's been a major resurgence (or just increased obviousness?) of fans who have far more enthusiasm for their own imagined "canon" than for what actually happened in the series (any series.)

In this case, it's word from certain writers - NOT the fans - that contradicts what actually happened earlier, right there on screen. They decided to revise history.

Ahhh..

.... I see the Buffy fans have the same problems as many of the Gundam Wing fangirls who took the doujinshi to be canon...

Willow LOVED Xander; if he hadn't been hung up on Buffy she would probably have married him. Willow not only liked Oz, she boinked him.

This is where they DEAL.

Not the fans, the writers. See above.
They found it necessary to make an official pronouncement that contradicted what we'd already seen (and had on DVD, even).

Yeah, it really annoyed me too.
But like you said, there's no such thing as bisexuals.
