About a half hour ago, I got called back to let me know I wouldn't be getting called back.

Why do I bother?
(Because the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.)

Why aren't you getting the call-backs? Do they give you any feedback? Why do you think you aren't getting the call-backs?

So far, the answer seems to be that there's been a more qualified candidate. The economy is bad right now, which means lots of unemployment and lots of competition.
