Another nyetwork update
Feb. 29th, 2008 06:28 pmUp to a month ago, the router we had at this complex kept dropping link every ten minutes or so.
A month ago, the manager replaced the router and left it locked down for a full week, to see if it worked. It did, but I couldn't do anything but the web and email. No CoH, no Puzzle Pirates, not even ICQ file transfers.
Three weeks ago, rather than open up the ports that I and others had requested, the owner opened up the router entirely. All tenants were advised to use their own firewall software. I already had ZoneAlarm, so no problem. I was happy... for a while.
A week or two ago (ish), the new router started freezing up again, often requiring several tries just to load web pages. At first I thought that someone in my complex was monopolizing all the bandwidth, either with torrents or possibly unwitting zombie infection (turning their computer into someone else's server farm). More recently, I began wondering if the slowdown was because all of the outside probe traffic was being let through to knock on the doors of each computer, rather than stopped at the gates. But I'm not a network troubleshooter, so I'm just guessing.
The point is now moot because tonight, I again found out that I couldn't connect to ICQ on the usual port. A quick call to the owner confirms that the router has been locked down entirely again. And he's going to leave it that way for ANOTHER full week, just to make sure he gets the same results he's already gotten, before even considering opening up specific ports. I tried to get him to cut that short - do we need a WHOLE week, again? - but I don't think he's gonna budge.
Honestly, I'm thinking about asking for a refund of the portion of my rent ($20) that goes to pay for the net hookup.
(What I really want is for it to be fixed, and promptly. To me, the net is no more an optional utility than hot water. So imagine if yours cut out every once in a while, or barely got to lukewarm, and if the landlord decided to leave it that way for a week "just to see what happens.")

Date: 2008-03-01 09:32 pm (UTC)(No, I understand what you're saying - my very own hookup, not the one the landlord charges $20 for. Again, I'll consider it. A lot of things are pending me getting another job within the next month. -_-; )
