It's not just L. Ron's greatest scam (right up there with Crowley and his Golden Dawn), it's also one of the favorite religions of the completely batshit.
"I'm NOT crazy! I don't need my medication and it's not my fault! You're just saying that because the Martians put you up to it! Or maybe it was the Jews..."
I have enough experience with the irrational (some of it firsthand, and being just lucid enough to know it) to believe that sometimes, yes, you really do need to take the pills. And the people telling you that you don't have to aren't your friends (around here that's called "enabling"), especially if their advice and support comes with a price tag.
"They can't help you, no one else can help you, only we can... and for just $49.95 a visit."
Some cynics may say all religions do this, or at least the big ones. I'm willing to extend a bit more charity. But Hubbard's little pyramid scheme seems to have been designed from the start to encourage the most unhealthy and exploitative aspects/behaviors. Hell of a way to win a bar bet.

Date: 2008-01-16 11:21 pm (UTC)In fact, the religion folks aren't allowed to talk to writer/illustrator winners about Scientology during the week of the workshop -- even if a person approaches them. They're REALLY careful about keeping the two separate. Which is good (in my opinion) because the contest would lose a LOT of respect in the scifi/fantasy community (not to mention a lot of their big name judges/workshop teachers) if they let the two mingle.
