Well, there's a chance they accidentally sucked another ghost in the trap at the same time, after which the two are completely co-mingled. That's canon from that episode of the cartoon where they went to a circus where a good ghost who was being blamed for a bad ghost's destruction, and the good one helped keep the bad one pinned so they could trap it, even though he knew it'd be curtains for him, too, because of the co-trapping problem.
