WSJ.com reports that the jobless rate is currently 8.5%, and is expected to reach 10.5% by the end of the year. (They're hoping that's as bad as it will get.)

The Romans invented a word for this: "decimation."

And naturally the real jobless rate is probably higher than that:

"The broadest gauge of unemployment, which includes part-timers seeking full-time jobs, hit 14.8% last month."

And I suspect that doesn't even include people that have been jobless so long they've dropped off of unemployment benefits rolls. Grim tidings in grim times.

This article ( http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/learn-how-to-invest/The-real-unemployment-rate.aspx? ) describes the real unemployment rate as 15.6%. Oregon's "real" unemployment rate may be as high as 18%.

Just to put things back into perspective a little, when the Romans decimated a legion, that didn't mean they sacked one-tenth of the men.

Mind you, layoffs at large corporations would be more... interesting if those employees who got to keep their jobs were forced to bludgeon to death those who didn't, but...

Give it another few months, I think you'd find some who would be willing.
