For at least the last decade or so, the old joke about computer cases - "any color you want, as long as it's beige" - has definitely swung to "as long as it's black." Which brings it back full circle to the original joke about Ford(s). Every time I go to a LAN party, I'm surrounded by rows of little Monoliths.

I understand why - a combination of black being a "cool", "manly" color and how it goes with everything (c.f. "little black dress"), in both personal and professional environments - but the near-monoculture still bothers me a little.

No.

Besides, you must admit that Apple's industrial design has been similarly monochromatic, all the way back to the ][, IIc and Mac (with the significant anomalies of the iMac and iPod Nano). They've even gotten rid of the rainbow stripes their logo used to have.

Maybe you need to start hanging out with some case modders. They're the riceboiz of the personal computer world. Nothing like some neon tubes to break up the monotony!

(NOTE: You may find the rest of that subculture unbearably annoying, and, as such, not really worth the benefit. Such people generally are otherwise damn kids who need to get off the lawn. :)
