"Don't worry your little head about it."
Apr. 13th, 2010 01:56 pmIt is a "feature" of many newfangled programs, including media players and now Windows 7, to want to grab all the files you have of a certain type and dump them into a "library": a big bin of Stuff which you can further sort into playlists, etc if you like, but whose actual location on your HD is more or less immaterial. Just say the word, and iTunes or whatever will index all your media and even rename the files (to some incomprehensible-to-humans alphanumeric string) and move them to some place only it knows!
Not me. I'm used to doing things the old-fashioned way, making the folders/directories myself and putting files where I want to, and KNOWING where they are. It's one of those areas where my geeky not-actually-bad-enough-to-be-real OCD tendencies come out. And so I tend to react to a program (or person) "helpfully" offering to reorganize my workspace by throwing myself over said desktop and snarling.
"But my system is much better! And don't worry about not being able to find anything; just tell me what you want and I'll get it for you!" ^_^
NO. MINE.
There are things I do want to "just work" without worrying about it. But file organizing is not one of them. It's yet another layer of abstraction, which I find unnecessary.

But I shouldn't have to employ a reference librarian to keep track of my Stuff, when I'm perfectly capable of doing so myself, and I get annoyed at all these application suites trying to set themselves up as such.
