more upgrade headaches
Apr. 14th, 2010 11:10 amIf I stick with 32-bit architecture/compatibility, my memory's going to top out at only a little above the 2 gigs I have now. (Especially if I install a shiny new vid card, since a 32-bit system has to mirror all of its memory in onboard ram.)
So I should switch to Win 7 and 64 bit, right?
But then I lose support for old programs and hardware. And if I want "XP mode", I have to get a version of Win 7 that costs twice as much as without. To run an OS I already have.
Also, that same 4 Gb of ram (that I can now use all of) is now "barely adequate", and I need to get more.
*headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*
EDIT: After talking to my brother, it looks like maybe going to 64 bit might not be so bad. Though I might have to get newer versions of some programs I've been holding onto. Googling for "[program name] 64 windows" is a good way to find out if other people have had issues with a particular app.
EDIT AGAIN: D'oh. MS has a "Windows 7 Compatibility" page, for easy searches. And the thing I was most concerned about, and most convinced wouldn't be supported, actualy is - my old Epson Stylus C40UX inkjet printer, that I got as a hand-me-down gift from a friend who knows how many years ago.
Deep breaths.
