The City of Heroes loading screen complained that my ATI drivers weren't up to date. Big deal, I figured, not thinking it would make much difference ... it's not like a software update is going to put new chips on the card, right? But tonight, figuring that I might as well be up to date, I got the latest set.

And now it runs. Not glassy smooth, but it runs. It's actually playable.

I don't know what to think any more.

The code in the drivers is what actually squeezes the performance out of the chips on the card. As they enhance the code, the performance of the card improves.

There's a hard limit, sure, but the drivers rarely get it right on the first try. It's the same way Amiga demos improved over the years, and why Halo 2 is going to kick ass over Halo graphically. ;)
