Today I was standing in the little park just outside the Steel Canyon train station (Yellow Line), watching some roleplayer try to have a conversation with a character named "Brujah Dhampire." That's right, Brujah in City of Heroes. And for extra twinkiness, she's half Brujah (and half-elf, I imagine) - "all of our strengths, none of our weaknesses," as Blade put it.

I didn't think I could gripe too much, since the character I'm playing is (I admit it) directly inspired by a video game (though at least one about actual super-heroes) ... until they logged that character off and came on with another, "Tammy Morgaine." Whose bio says she is, guess what, possessed by a demon which gives her powers, but against which she must struggle for control! Oh, The Angst!

And then, as if that's not enough, the player makes that character go away and brings on "Amber Morgaine." Who is possessed by an angel, as some sort of cosmic balance, and is seeking to free her sister.

That was the point where I resolved to get out of the park.

The way I look at it, at least this player (or players, as it may be) is putting more effort than many, and perhaps most, into creating characters and not just pieces on a game board. There are worse out there, after all. On Justice this morning there was a "hero" by the name of Bumcrack piteously broadcasting requests for a team. That's right, Bumcrack.

I'll take the White Wolf refugees over that kind of player any day.

You have a point. But it still makes my teeth grind. (Both kinds do, actually.)

I used to play a combat LARP (more LARPing than combat, but none of that rocks-paper-scissors crap, we used boffer weapons), NERO to be exact. NERO, unlike Ampguard (sp?)(which is the mirror game - more combat than LARP) doesn't have rules against naming your character after a fictional character. No one had done it...until Joe showed up as Ashen Shugar and broke everyone who'd read the Riftwar books brains. Let us just say he was was everything Ashen Shugar was not...

If you run into a guy named Razorclaw, run, do not walk, run for the nearest exit.
