It's easy to forget that Chewbacca is not just a "great furry lump", but a member of an advanced tool-using species. Maybe that's why it's only after 27 years that I've realized why he messes with the hung-up bait that gets them all netted by Ewoks. He is not, as his human complains, merely "thinking with [his] stomach"; rather, he's trying to point out that something or someone laid a trap for this animal, and the Rebel commandos and Imperial garrison aren't alone on this moon. (On the other hand, he apparently didn't recognize that it was part of a trap to catch even bigger game...)
