One of my characters in City of Heroes was given the task of rescuing a kidnap victim, one Ayn Race. Of course, I immediately recognized the name of the controversial author, known mostly for libertarian vampire softporn. ("When he was done ravishing and drinking deeply of her, he invited her to come stay at his secret industrialist retreat.")
While her books and philosophy have many passionate adherents, particularly among high school and college students, critics (and ex-fans) consider them to be turgidly overwritten (as with the infamous twenty-page speech declaring the superiority of the vampire over mortals in all respects), shallow, and unworkable in practice. They claim that certain questions are never adequately answered - such as who the vampires will feed on once they've escaped the "persecution" of humans, and when you've got a bunch of supernaturally beautiful people in formal eveningwear, who's going to clean the toilets?
