another Trek character snippet
Feb. 3rd, 2011 01:53 pm"When I was a kid, the Borg were the boogeyman. The Dominion War was over and the Founders said they weren't going to mess with us anymore, and we didn't know as much about the Undine as we do now. Besides, those enemies were the stuff of adult paranoia, spies and infiltrators, subtle threats. The Borg were the opposite of subtle. They just didn't care.
"Twice, they sent a cube all the way to Sol. The first time was in '67, and then again in '73. Both times they blew through Mars' defense zone without even slowing down. We weren't the target. My parents told me about it: how there was nothing they could do but hide in the shelters, hold their breath, and pray for a miracle while they waited for the Borg to finish with Earth and come back. They got their miracle, both times, or I wouldn't be here today.
"Admiral Janeway's report said that the Borg had been dealt a crippling blow, and a lot of people believed her. People wanted to believe, with the Federation a wreck from the war and in no shape to fight another. But if there's one thing I've learned about the Borg is that no matter what you throw at them - even a miracle - they adapt. And they come back. Always.
"The first time I heard them for real, not a recording or a holoprogram, was on the Osiris. We'd just come out of warp to respond to the distress call and there they were, big as life. And then those four words cut through the intercom, backed up by the cold arrogance and power of a million voices:
"'WE ARE THE BORG.'
"Let's just say I'm glad I'd gone to the bathroom before I started my shift."
