Got everything moved to the new apartment, though it was a near thing.

In the words of Illidan the Betrayer, I was not prepared.

Most of that is because, as noted in a previous entry, I had hardly any room at the old place to live, let alone pack in, or attempt to do both at the same time. Though to be fair, I'm also a procrastinator, lazy, and/or a perfectionist. The result of this is that I had somewhere between a third and half my stuff nicely packed, in labeled boxes, when the movers showed up Wednesday afternoon. With all the books still in the brick-and-board shelves along two walls, because - again - nowhere to put 'em.

Fortunately, the movers (the eponymous McDougal and Son) leapt to the challenge, even though they'd scheduled another job later that day (for which they were, in the end, only half an hour late). With three pairs of hands instead of only one, boxes were quickly assembled and books and clothes and other sundries quickly shoved into them. Delicate bric-a-brac was handled with proper care and placed in open-topped boxes. Loading the boxes already packed, and filling the rest, took at least 2 of the 3 hours. I wasn't moving far, only to the other side of downtown, and so the drive took very little time, as did the unloading.

With the movers off to their next job, there were a few things left in my closet - mostly spare bedding, some old toys and such - that hadn't been packed before we finally ran out of boxes and time. Fortunately, my brother Travis was able to help with that light load; he came by with his kids, put everything in the trunk of his car, everyone got to see the new apartment, and he dropped me back where I started to finish the cleaning up and turn over the keys.

Right now, my new apartment is full of boxes - some of them labeled and organized, others anonymous and packed in haste with whatever was handy. Over the long weekend, I'll be opening all of them and finding places to put the contents. And with any luck, I'll have phone and net and hot water by the time I get home...

Thanks. Of course, as I said, there's lots left to do... and my worry that if this place ends up not working out, I'll have to do it all again in six months' time. :(

Looking back at the period of my life when I moved several times a year, I have no idea how I managed.
