In the "nothing really ever changes" department, the BBC site had an article over the weekend suggesting that the infamous Halloween 1938 panic over Orson Welles' broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" was not really so bad, and mostly made up exaggerated by newspaper accounts of isolated incidents, in part so that print editors could wag a chastising finger at the sensationalist, irresponsible upstart (which I'm sure had nothing at all to do with the worry that radio might soon put them all out of business).

It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the Internet cafes came the sounds of MMO players raiding and griefing, softened almost into melody by the distance. It all seemed so 1337 and tranquil.
