I was thinking more along the lines of The Vostok Strain; or perhaps a month from now, the whole camp will be found burned and/or frozen to death, except for one surviving sled dog.

(Less directly, also reminded of all the stories where scientists discover a mysterious, very old and apparently hollow object that's been thoroughly sealed and covered with all kinds of undecipherable markings - which, according to one deluded crackpot, supposedly constitute some kind of absurd superstitious warning - and promptly start drilling into it, in the finest spirit of scientific discovery.)
