Tiny wonders
Jul. 14th, 2012 07:14 pmI was just briefly in the bathroom, and noticed nearby motion; a couple of feet away, a spider (dark and undistinguished, its body about the size of the letter "O") was dropping down from the ceiling on an invisible strand of silk. I'm not generally arachnophobic - in fact, I'm quite content to have them as co-habitants, unless they're the bitey kind - and so I just took a moment to marvel at what I was seeing:
This little critter was furling out a stream of liquid organic polymer that hardens on contact with air, shaping it with parts so tiny I can't see them with my unaided eyes.
It paused about six inches above the tile floor, possibly surveying its landing zone - I can only speculate about the thoughts and perceptions of such a creature - and then dropped the rest of the way and skittered behind a box, out of sight.
Neat.
