A while back, I observed that I'll probably not ever see a new format of physical media dedicated to/designed solely for audio content. Now I'm wondering if I'm going to be buying any more at all.

As recently as five years ago, I had a seemingly endless need for more blank CDs and DVDs, to burn... um, *cough* "stuff" that I'd downloaded off the Internet. I bought them by the spindle, and either stacked them back on the empty spindles or organized them into binders or put them in jewel cases (which I also bought in bulk). There was a time when I painstakingly printed out fronts and/or backs for those cases with my color printer, before everything went to DVD boxes.

But now? It all lives on my HD. I couldn't tell you the last time I burned an actual disc. Even the backups go to an external HD. 700 megs, or even 4.3 gigs, seems so small now. My downloading habits have changed, too; I get stuff from Steam, and sometimes iTunes. Anything else, I simply have no free time to consume. (But I still pick up DVDs, on sale, of shows and movies I used to like... just in case I ever find the time to watch them again.)

There are a few exceptions, files saved off to (relatively) non-volatile storage as an extra assurance, but my days of filling binders with neatly hand-labeled silver coasters are over.

Well, I still burn them fairly often so I can play them in my car. My car has a CD player, no other method for playing music.
