Batman - Dead End
Jul. 24th, 2003 01:38 amIf you haven't seen it yet, you can get it at http://www.theforce.net/theater/shortfilms/batman_deadend/ (in QuickTime format). Go ahead. I'll wait.
I liked it. A lot. Starts off as a fine little Batman piece, very reminiscent of the animated series, with nods to Miller and Alex Ross (who's gone on record praising it). Then, about halfway through, things get... weird. This is where some purists cry "foul," but hey, it's nothing DC hasn't done themselves. I know, I saw the mini-series in question.
Besides, it was never intended to be a serious movie - it's a demo reel, for cryin' out loud. The fact that, with a minimal budget and no plot to speak of, it still manages to be better than the Schumacher movies shows just how far the Bat-franchise has fallen.
But hey, that's my opinion.

Hm. Spoilers, I suppose...
Date: 2003-07-24 10:16 am (UTC)Have they done one with all of these? I know they've done Batman crossovers with Predator and Aliens, but I didn't know they'd done one with both. Not that I'd care enough to actually go looking for it. The only Aliens crossover I can think of that I actually cared much about at all was Warren Ellis' WildCATS/Aliens, mainly 'cause of its interactions with StormWatch, which I'd gotten to like.
As for this... It's pretty neat. Quite well done. Joker doesn't really get to do any mayhem, but oh well. The creature FX were pretty sweet. Batman seemed a bit under-armored, though. Like, he ends up wearing just a spandex shirt, rather than anything resembling the multi-layer kevlar/nomex weave and maybe some plating that he's shown wearing in the comics to provide some protection 'cause the guys he fights often have guns.
Yeah. Even with my gripe above, this is still pretty freakin' cool.
