... and it still doesn't make any sense.

Was it just me, or was Dorothy looking more Rei-like than usual?

Why would you say she looks Rei like? Just because she was jacked into a mech and piloting it?

Actually I found it to be stereotypically anime, complete with a WTF? just happened ending. Leaves you with more questions than answers, so when they go for funding for a sequel, the audience is behind them. Lots of questions left unanswered. I liked his "request" for CPR though.

I didn't find that to be so much stereotypical of anime in general, as it was stereotypical of All The Cool Kids Are Doing It anime post-Evangelion, a lot of which (Hellsing, Lain, Big O) is the fault of one Chiaki J. Konaka.

But it did strengthen my desire to go pick up all the discs of Dai-Guard! I can find. ;)

And Kel? The minute Angel walked out into that Game Grid thing, I was like "...and next they'll tell us her last name is Ayanami." Except, uh, Roger. Maybe. Who the hell knows.

Anyone else notice that his grand finale speech contradicted itself in at least one section? I'm wondering if the translation staff was just shaking their heads by then as well.

I'll agree with you there. So, is Roger a robot, or are the robot Rogers patterned after him? Just who or what the fuck is Roger anyway?
The contradictions may be intentional, this does come from a culture with 3 major religions, whom most of the population believes are all right - living with contradicory truths is the status quo

...I'm suspecting that he's a robot of some sort, although he is shown breathing when Dorothy isn't, which lends some credence to the "patterned after him" idea.

For one thing, he tells Angel that memories are what enable people to believe in their own existence-- and then says that he erased his own memories so that he could continue existing. That's the contradiction that was bothering me. Did they use Roger for the template for the Negotiators and that army of Megadeus they love to show and not explain? Did he choose to forget his role in that so that he didn't commit suicide with remorse?

But, who knows if we'll ever find out at this point.

It appears that the world is some sort of holodeck, so what's the purpose of everything? some sort of experiment? a generation ship of the survivors of a global war? This is Alpha Complex and Big-O is your friend? (and what guy wouldn't like a Big-O... this name qualifies as perhaps the goofiest of any anime I have ever watched)

I don't think that the robot Rogers, or the army of Big Os, really exist. That whole sequence was, IMO, symbolic. It's a series of possibilities: "Maybe you're a robot. Maybe you're a homeless wanderer. Maybe you're already dead. Which is true? Are ANY of them true? I'm not telling, heheheheHAHAHAHA!"

The state of anime (especially Giant Robot Anime) post-Eva makes me imagine what would have happened if Frank Miller had gone totally nuts during the last part of The Dark Knight Returns, turning it into a rambling, meaningless mess ... but it's still the Coolest Thing In Comics, so everyone still imitates it. So instead of the Grim and Gritty era, we get Weird and Pointless?

Perhaps Grant Morrison and Alan Moore got That Way because they read TDKR while on good drugs and *perceived* it as a rambling, meaningless mess.

It'd explain The Invisibles and Promethea (both of which I do actually like, go fig).

Wait - that's basically what happened to Dave Sim, and the reaction was more like "um... whatever, dude. Let us know if you ever get back to telling Cerebus's story."
So I guess not.
