I would tend to think the south celebrates Jefferson...but then again he did have an affair with one of his slaves supposedly. Maybe that's ok, as long as you don't marry them and put them in the big house.
genetic testing removed the supposedly from the question back in the late 80's or very early 90's, it was done while I was still in college. Currently both sets of descendants have combined the family reunion. He did free all his slaves on his death, as for that matter, did Washington. They were hoping to start a trend, but the cotton mill put the kaibosh on that, that though, is a topic for another day.
Well, Gavin came home from kindergarten last year with a construction paper top hat, but in general it seems to be overshadowed by MLK Jr. Day. WAAAY overshadowed (he came home that day discussing slavery. In detail.) Around here, the big thing is the sales.
Frankly, I'm not sure President's day has had any really big component ANYWHERE for a while. The kids often don't get it off, because it's a snow make-up day, and corporations don't give it as a holiday. (This year being the exception for me... but Quest Software is weird that way. I never know what my holidays are going to be from year to year...)
No, down here you get MLK day, and Good Friday (or Easter Monday, depending on the company... sometimes both). People are amazed when I point out that I get neither of the latter, but then I work for a CA software company, and we all know about them there califernians!
We get it off as part of "Winter Break." I did teach a Lincoln themed art project the week before. Of course, I'm pretty far away from the South.
MLK Day is a serious thing up here too, but we mostly focus on the Civil Rights movement, equality, and diversity. But we do a lot of slavery stuff as part of the regular curricculum.
