Come up with a plot that does NOT require the supposedly wise and good Vigilant Council, immortal sponsors of the Galactic Fellowship of Space Cops, to make the same goddamn stupid mistakes over and over, so that the loose cannons on the force can bail them out of their own mess. Again.

If one analyzes things, I think you discover that the Oans and the Guardians in particular are, ultimately, responsible for well over HALF of the cosmic-level disasters in the DC universe, all by themselves. It's hard to even say they're just idiots rather than secretly malicious at times.

How about a plot where the loose cannons, despite multiple admonishments from said Council, still insist on doing what they're SURE is the right thing, only to almost cause disaster and have to be bailed out by the more conventional enforcers?

Given the Council's track record, that would certainly be a twist ending, and even the conventional enforcers would be surprised.
